Answering the Call - A Journey to Rosebud

In the quiet, early hours of Friday morning, a semi-truck rumbled into the community of Parmelee, South Dakota, carrying hope packed into pallets of water, food, and supplies. This wasn’t just a delivery—it was a mission, an act of service to the people of the Rosebud Reservation, one of the most underserved areas in the country. This is the story of HEART Response Ministry’s recent trip to Rosebud, where generosity, hard work, and faith came together to uplift a community.

Trucks of goods brought to Rosebud Reservation from Heart

A Truck Full of Hope

Fred, a dedicated local community partner, works alongside Howard and Brittney (they run the resource center at Parmelee) to keep the Parmelee resource center stocked with essential goods. This time, he was joined by Robin Lowe, the driver hired by HEART, who went above and beyond his role. Not only did Robin deliver the load, but he also stepped in to help unload pallets of water and boxes from Food for Kidz, navigating them into the basement of the resource center. When additional deliveries to nearby towns like Antelope and St. Francis were needed, Robin volunteered again, ensuring that supplies reached their destinations on time.

Robin’s words summed up the heart of the mission: "It’s fulfilling to know the work I do helps people." His actions mirrored the dedication of everyone involved, turning a simple delivery into an act of love and compassion.

Meeting Immediate Needs

While goods were being unloaded in Parmelee, Fred transported additional supplies to St. Francis, a town about 25 minutes away, where a day of worship, service, and community connection awaited. The first giveaway and shared meal brought people together, offering not only physical sustenance but also spiritual encouragement.

It was in St. Francis that a young man won a bicycle during the giveaway. He later approached ministry leaders to express his growing interest in knowing God, sharing that his life had been chaotic and he believed only Jesus could bring peace. His story is a testament to the transformative power of these missions.

Restoring the Carpenter Shop

On Saturday, the team turned their attention to the city of Antelope, where they resumed renovations at The Carpenter Shop church, a project they had started during their June visit. In just a few days, they remodeled two bathrooms, replaced flooring in the kitchen and hallway, and gave the church a fresh start with deep cleaning and painting. The church, now a beacon of hope for the community, is not only a house of worship but also a place for gathering, healing, and renewal.

The Need is Great

The Rosebud Reservation, like many Native American communities, faces profound challenges. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 50% of residents on the reservation live below the poverty line, and unemployment rates often exceed 80%. Access to basic necessities like clean water, food, and housing is limited. The community struggles with systemic issues that include inadequate healthcare, education gaps, and a lack of infrastructure.

HEART Response Ministry’s’ work on the Rosebud Reservation goes beyond meeting immediate needs—it’s about creating sustainable change. Every meal shared, every home or church remodeled, and every message of faith delivered brings a little more light into a community that faces daily hardships.

A Call to Action

As the team packed up after a long week of service, there was no question about the impact of their efforts. From the remodeled Carpenter Shop church to the lives touched through meals, worship, and giveaways, the trip to Rosebud was a reminder that love, faith, and hard work can change lives.

As Sonia, a local community leader, reflected, “Praise God. They came up to me and let me know… they want to know more about Jesus because only He can change their life.”

This mission is far from over, and HEART Response Ministries invites you to join them in continuing this vital work. Together, we can bring hope to places that need it most.
